It was my friends 85 IROC-Z with a 383 and a beefed up clutch. Needless to say it’s a good thing it was a beefed up clutch. Very good time though and I am glad I am kind of getting the hang of things now

Go to Craigslist, find the cheapest non-shitty car with a stick under 2k, buy it, daily it. Bam, now you can drive stick. That’s what I did. 10/10 would do it again, and I don’t have to feel bad about nuking someone else’s clutch and tires.

This was my method too

Or you can rent a car in Europe and drive that for 10 days; that’s where I got the majority of my practice in before I got my M3.

I drove on a friend’s manual Mazda 3 and while shifting felt natural , I could not stop stalling the car when braking since I kept forgetting to use my left foot and downshift. It wasn’t a problem downshifting when not braking, but always when coming to a complete stop.
Since I’m not a total moron , that was all done in a parking lot and was maybe about 15 minutes of driving.
I’ve started training myself to lift and press in my left foot as well in my (automatic) car. It’s not going well since I usually forget.

You had plenty of torque at your disposal, which makes using a manual transmission much easier. Now try it with an econobox with 80 lb•ft of torque and tall gearing.

That’s the new plan. Actually just got off Craigslist searching for stuff

Luckily I did not have that problem. However I did try and throw it into first when I meant to go into 3rd that was bad

Yeah but I don’t plan on ever owning one of those. I wouldn’t mind a Miata or similar sports car with a small engine though.

I know what you mean, but it's not about preparing for a future purchase and instead about developing the skills. Once you learn to modulate the clutch you will have little trouble driving different cars. I learned to drive on a Suzuki Samurai and stalled it countless times while I learned. After I got the hang of it Dad had me drive his company truck (an S-10 with the 2.8) and never stalled it once.

I learned on low HP cars to drive stick and i think its better that way. Makes you learn the clutch engagement better.
First time i drove my ls1 rx7 i stalled it. and that was with 8+ years of driving stick. a 700whp clutch
will do that

Haha, everyone does an accidental downshift sooner or later. That one isn’t so bad. Just recently I was downshifting from 4 to 3 and accidentally went into 1, but I stomped back in on the clutch pretty quickly once I realized the tach was going up way too quickly.

I learned on a first gen 4 runner with 400,000 miles on the transmission and who knows how much on the clutch and I thought I would never get the hang of it! I stalled every time for almost 30 mins of practicing and then the second car I drove after I got the hang of it was a 280zx and I never stalled once

Yeah I think each new car could be kinda tricky

Yeah that might have freaked out the engine even more haha
